are now taking. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. an attempt to deliver thousands of signatures to the archbishop of san francisco was blocked by locked doors today. sal castanedo was there as protesters urged the archbishop to cancel plans to attend a rally against same-sex marriage and sal joins us now live. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: tori, good afternoon. just as you mentioned, when the group tried to present those petitions to the archbishop's office, they were met with locked doors leading to grumbles from the crowd that had gathered. the group says it came to present a petition asking archbishop to skip a washington, d.c. conference that opposes same-sex civil marriage. the petition is signed by 30,000 people and 100 elected officials. the archbishop is scheduled to speak at the gathering

thursday, and that has angered many in the lgbt community, and politicians, including nancy pelosi, lieutenant-governor gavin newsom and san francisco mayor, ed lee. >> we're not asking him to tote little change his mind -- totally change his mind. we're just asking that he not attend a group that's really hateful and that he would make a statement standing on the side of love rather than hate. >> reporter: the archbishop released a letter yesterday asking for opponents of his plan to get to know him before they judge. a few here told me they understand the catholic church's long-hailed stance on same-sex marriage. they came here to they say to tell the archbishop it's this particular conference they don't want him to attend. >> the archbishop has the right to his beliefs and the right to

express them. but the june 19th event is being organized by some of the most extreme anti-lgbt organizations and leaders including the national organization for marriage and the family research council. >> reporter: now, since the group leaders were not able to present the petitions to anyone inside, they slipped the petitions through the locked glass doors, a few pages at a time. the archdiocese declined to comment on today's protests. live in san francisco, sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, sal. the rainbow flag is flying over san francisco's city hall this noontime. mayor ed lee helped with the ceremony raising to celebrate pride month in the city. today state lawmakers in sacramento are considering tougher regulations for ride sharing companies like uber and lyft. christien kafton is live from uber headquarters with the proposed changes and what the

people who use the ride share companies think about the rules. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. state lawmakers are considering bills that could change the way companies like lyft and uber operate. a little over an hour ago, i received an e-mail from uber saying the company is watching the hearing in sacramento closely and will be issuing a statement a little later on today. supporters of ride sharing options rallied at the state capitol today urging lawmakers to ease the path for companies like uber and lyft to operate. they are looking at two bills. one would force the companies to monitor driving records, check backgrounds and carry insurance similar to taxi company's. the second bill would require liability insurance to be carried. some state they like the ride sharing companies but would like tighter controls. >> i think there should be more rules as far as safety. >> reporter: ride share supporters in san francisco don't want to see a viable transportation option regulated

out of existence. >> it's really kind of hindering the whole side, the fact that you can get a ride on the fly and suddenly have all of these regulations. >> reporter: uber took its battle online urging supporters to contact lawmakers. uber said one bill is an attempt by taxi companies to kill off the competition and the other to serve their own interest. we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. an assembly committee just a little while ago decided to postpone a decision on moving forward with a proposed cyberbullying law named after a south bay teenager. the legislation called audrey's law stalled in the committee. the law would impose a mandatory two-year sentence for juveniles who sexual assault someone. it passed unanimously in the senate but still needs approval in the assembly. audrey pott was a saratoga high school student who took her own

life in 2012 after she was sexually assaulted by classmates while she was unconscious. photos of the incident were taken and shared. san francisco police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened just about two hours ago. it was reported just before 10:00 at 25th and connecticut streets in the city's potrero hill neighborhood. a man believed to be in his 20s was found shot in the upper body. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. in oakland, police are beefing up patrols in the tell mess cam district after -- temescal district after a woman was brutally mugged the shattuck. tara moriarty is live in the area and tells us how police are pursuing leads. >> reporter: the victim was walking along on her way to meet a friend in the tell mess cam district when -- tell mess cam district when she -- temescal district when she was mugged. maya and her dad were walking back from dinner when he yelled

and scared off the two men punching the woman. >> i felt what if it had been my daughter. >> reporter: witnesses have reported to us that the suspects did rob her of her items. they were seen running from the scene and they did get into a vehicle that drove away from the area. neighbors say car break-ins have spiked but they are surprised by such a brazen physical attack. >> one of my big fears walking around as a woman by myself. you never expect it to happen at 6:00 in the evening. i'm still freaking out. >> reporter: danny marchman says it's sad that neighbors have become accustomed to crime. >> yeah, i think we become too used to it. we're the ones who should be careful and responsible, if you leave a bag in your car, it's your fault verses we shouldn't have to put up with that. >> reporter: this man says he

witnesses car break-ins every day. >> it makes you feel helpless. >> reporter: right now police are beefing up patrols and trying to dig up more surveillance video from the area to see if they can get more information on the suspect's getaway car. in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details on trim in the -- on crime in the temescal area. these red dots show where crimes were reported in just the past week. those crimes include theft, burglaries, vandalism and a robbery. an east bay city puts the spotlight on crime-fighting surveillance cameras. the city council is set to vote tonight on the plan to install a camera system including license plate readers. they would be put on about a dozen roads leading in and out of the city. the system will cost $300,000. the police department says the cameras are needed because the majority of crimes in fremont are committed by people who do not live there. new developments in the

u.s. consulate attack in benghazi that killed americans two years ago. pentagon officials arrested the suspected ringleader in that 2012 attack. they say he was captured during an undercover raid in libya over the weekend and is now on his way to the united states. this is the first arrest in that attack. among those killed was chris stevens who grew up in fremont. islamic militants are continuing their violent advance across iraq and making gains to the capital city. in baghdad, police and hospital officials say a deadly roadside bomb killed ten people and wounded 25 others. no group is claiming responsibility for the blast which targeted a crowded outdoor market. in washington, some lawmakers urged president obama to send more assistance to the iraqi government. mitch mcconnell says they are

there's the other tornado. >> at least two people have lost their lives as twin tornadoes ripped through a small town in nebraska. 16 others were injured by the storm. as our reporter reports, residents begins the daunting

task of rebuilding. >> reporter: the tornado came roaring through. we talked to one resident who survived list home completely pried off the foundation. the images are men as ing. >> they are merging. they are gonna merge. >> reporter: two tornadoes ripped through northeast nebraska, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. >> this is definitely the first time i've seen two tornadoes like that, that violent on the same storm. a lot of times you will see multiple storms and then one dominant one and weaker ones. >> it seemed like forever. but i guess it was only a couple of minutes. it was coming down on top of us but the -- >> reporter: the worst hit was the small town of pilger, about 90 miles from omaha. officials are assessing the damage but they estimate nearly three quarters of the town is gone. >> three houses on the opposite side of the block that are gone. >> reporter: what about your sister's house? >> it's gone. it was on the corner. it's gone.

>> sick. i mean, lost everything. >> reporter: pilger is not alone. damage is spread across four towns. nebraska's governor has declared a state of emergency, putting the national guard on standby. now residents are left to pick up what's left of their town. >> rebuild. it will take a long time. >> it will be a setback, but we'll get something done i'm sure. >> reporter: and residents in pilger with a lot of hard work and planning ahead, not only did they lose their fire station but they lost their post office and city hall. there will be a lot of heavy lifting left in this square mile town here in nebraska. now back to you. a homicide investigation is underway in san francisco after a man was found stabbed to death in the city's mission district. his body was discovered just before 10:00 last night on 16th street near cap street and the victoria theater. you can see the scene from this photo taken by ktvu's john

sasaki. so far, the man's identity has not been released. employees for the marin veterans memorial center and the marin showcase theater are demanding action on safety issues. a number of paid employees and volunteers have appeared before the county board of supervisors. they say they were promised increased security, 875 days ago. about two and a half years. and they are blaming a lack of security for a number of violent episodes in the last few months. some involve assaults on employees, the county's risk manager spoke after the meeting. >> the security adviser community will continue to meet and look at each event coming up over the next six months and determine if in addition to the minimum levels, we will add security. >> the employees' union wants a minimum of two guards at the veterans memorial center and one at the theater along with security cameras. a 14-year-old fairfield boy

is being hailed a hero for saving an elderly man and a dog from a burning apartment. latrell says he was hanging out with a friend at their apartment complex on grande circle when he smelled smoke. latrell says he went to investigate and saw a disabled man struggling to get out of the smoke-filled apartment. latrell went inside and helped the man escape. then he said his dog was still inside. >> i went back down here where the dog is and back in the room where the flames were coming from, i opened the door and the dog came out. >> the young teen suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by his mother. while firefighters praise his heroic actions, they do not recommend entering a burning building without the proper equipment. relief may be coming for people who commute along the busy corridor 4. commercial property owners just agreed to a new tax measure to help cover the cost of building a new e- bart station. the area of railroad and 4. the

taxes would apply for those who file for a new building permit around the station. the project would use -- which would use small decemberer powered rail cars is part of a ten-mile extension from the pittsburg station. it's expected to be completed by the end of 2017. an unseasonably cool system yesterday gave us a lot of wind and below normal temperatures. today they are recovering. we had patchy fog. that cleared out fast. it's wall-to-wall sign. temperatures are running warmer than they were by 2 to 7 degrees. the low gave some snow near elco, nevada. what? yes, it did. the ridge of high pressure you can see it toppling over right there. that's giving us a little bit of a northerly breeze and some drier air. the water temps continue to be cold but temperatures aloft and

inland not warm enough. it's a warmer forecast. i think most locations will still come in below average. 68 yesterday at san carlos. they are already 68. we'll bump them up to 75. livermore, 71, upper 70s today for some and then napa 75 to 81. it will be warmer today. temperatures inland should be about 85, 86 for some of the most inland areas. they will be shy of that today. 76 fairfield. the wind collapsed. yesterday it was roaring for most locations. 70s for some. 60s for others. but definitely a little bit warmer today than yesterday. and some areas are running in the 40s this morning are now in the 70s. rather consistent here. pittsburg, 74. orinda, 74 as well. on the peninsula, we had 40s. menlo park now they are all in the 70s. most locations even foster city at 71. pretty consistent here. coast, bay, inland. the breeze has picked up a little bit. it was calm and now it's showing more being northwesterly. it's kind of variable but it's

picked up. sfo west at 10. hayward 8. san jose west. you get the idea. it's still kind of an onshore push. there's our system. a lot of snow up in western montana. severe weather out ahead of that, you can see how big it is and how much of the area it covers. almost the enpair pacific northwest and extending into southern california earlier today, northeast california, a line of showers and clouds went right through susanville straight across almost to the north of reno. it had upper 30s, truck eand tau -- truckee and tahoe. 74, 76 ukiah and sacramento. high pressure will build in for a day. a lot of sun. it will be breezy but not windy. it's running warm. we'll get a quick warmup on wednesday. and then we'll start another cooling trend. probably if not thursday and friday and taking us into the weekend. warmer today. 80s inland in locations had a lot of 70s yesterday.

a little breezy but nothing compared to yesterday when the wind was kicking around. 60s, 70s and 80s. some of these temperatures are near average to slightly below for this time of year. we're 10 to 15 degrees below normal in june. this time of year with the nights short and the days long, it doesn't take long. it was really cool. we had a lot of 40s. 43 at napa and mill valley. after we get to thursday, i think we stand to see near average temperatures to slightly below. a little roller coaster ride this week. >> yeah. kind of enjoying the cool weather. >> i don't mind. it's nice. the trout is now having an effect on vacation plans for people hoping to head to a popular campground. the parks department has closed all 154 tent sites at memorial county park. the campground is in the santa cruz mountains nestled in redwoods along pescadero creek. the area is facing tight water restrictions because of low froes in the waters and creeks. overnight fogging scheduled for tonight in parts of san

stocks moving slightly higher in afternoon trading led by the financial sector. long-term interest rates moved higher. banks will earn more money with loans. with lingering concern over the conflict in iraq, one analyst said there's not a lot of impetus to buy and sell. the market is kind of drifting along. taking a live look, the dow is up 25. the nasdaq up 19 and the s&p up 4. a tesla's stock is up nearly 4% right now after jumping almost 9% yesterday. the increase followed report the electronics carmaker could be looking to team up with nissan and bmw to expand the network of charging stations. nissan is the biggest electric carmaker in the world and bmw is starting to produce luxury electric vehicles. the debate over the fairness of high frequency trading is taking center stage at a senate hearing today. lawmakers want to know if the stock market gives unfair

advantage to high frequency traders. part of what is at issue is if exchanges give high frequency traders an edge by allowing them to serve their storers at the exchange shaving fractions of a second off the timing of a trade. the president of the new york stock exchange and other industry executives are scheduled to testify. popular tv talk show host dr. oz was on capitol hill today to defend his name during a hearing on deceptive advertising for weight loss products. dr. oz whose talk show airs here on ktvu, answered questions before a senate committee. he's under fire for some of the weight loss products he endorse eson his show. comments from dr -- he endorses on his show. comments were emotional. >> i don't get why you need to say this stuff because you know it's not true. >> i actually do personably believe in the items that i talk about in the show. i passionately study them.
